Thanks for the timely discussion of the very unfortunate demise of Gotham Chamber Opera. That news really was shocking given how they seemed to be the darling of the New York media, and had so many successful productions over the past few seasons. At the risk of sounding like one of the serial contributors on your favourite classical music blog (ummm, I think you know which one I mean!), I think I need to reiterate some of his observations. It seems completely insane that in such a large, incredibly wealthy city as New York City that a small, very successful company like Gotham cannot survive. Sure, whatever financial mismanagement might have gone on there isn't great news, but really, in New York City there wasn't a pool of donors who could have footed the $600,000 or so to save such a well established unit? This is a prime example of trying to produce opera in a society that relies so much on private funding. It's a testament to the sad disregard North American governments have for culture - I just don't think this sort of thing would happen anywhere in western, central or eastern Europe in a similar situation. Maybe we'll hear more about the details of what happened at Gotham Chamber Opera, but it's a crying shame - emphasis on the shame!
