There is a very good DVD of Pelleas et Mélisande with Natalie Dessay that I recommend. I just got it. This opera is best seen to understand it. Dessay is a good Mélisande and I think this music is more suited to her now than Cleopatra. I have been wanting to listen to this opera since I went to an all French recital that Renee Fleming did earlier this year where they played interviews of Mary Garden talking about the Debussy role that she created, Mélisande.
